Why Does Google Show Anyone The PR Of A Site?

Since "normal" searchers use Google to search for information, products, etc. they could care less about the PageRank of a site. Who cares about PageRank? As best I can tell only people involved in SEO do.... So they question is, why does Google show it to us? The only potential reason that PR is important is link building and as we all know, that is generally used to manipulate links - a big Google no no...

So, why o why does Google show us PR? As far as I can tell, they could fairly easily NOT show PR of sites any longer....perhaps that is why there hasn't been a toolbar update in some time?

Anyway, looking forward to some thoughts on this topic. Thanks!

    Google Trust.
In the early days of search, and I am sure to this day. People use the PR toolbar, as an indication of an authority's (Googles) Trust in a certain page.
As in life, people need to be led a little into knowing, whats good for them. The PR toolbar offers that to searcher's

And a lot of people outside of SEO use it all the time.

Hey Kevin thanks for the reply....that answered my exact question! I guess I was wrong about "normal" searchers not giving a hoot about PageRank.

    Thanks again!

I think Google is phasing PR out right about now. It's the most visible and easily abused element of their algorithm. They don't need it anymore, and not that many would really miss it.

In fact, when they only update it once in a while, it becomes a farce.

Need to listen to Cutts from the 1:40 mark onward. He pretty much states its going to be phased out. He uses IE 10 as an excuse but for a company with their own browser who never does anything because of MS that makes no sense. They are just looking for the right time to pack it up. Like The OP states they have no real use for it. The idea that people look at the tool bar to determine credibility is not a good enough reason to keep it.
