So does backlink building still work in 2013 ?

So many tutorials out there tell you to use forum signatures as backlinks and leave a backlink at whatever authority site possible.

Does this kind of backlink building has "ANY" effect on SEO/RANKING at all now in 2013 ?

Backlinks are the only thing that work in 2013 if search engine traffic is your goal.

Maybe not so much forum signatures, but strong high PR backlinks from quality sites are the cool kids at school these days.

Mmmm.....I was informed that backlinking was a thing of the past and would damage my ranking if I continued. I think this is a lie as I still backlink and my sites have risen slightly.

Ofcourse! Backlinks still work, without that your website wouldn't survive in search engines (some claim they can rank even without backlinks). But if you just stick on to forum signatures, that wouldn't help.

You have to diversify your link building campaigns and start getting links from authority pages. That would definitely help you. If you just depend on one source for backlinks like forum sigs, then you will not find any success with it. Even content plays a very important role, if you have 1000s of backlinks pointing to your site which has a crap content, then it is of no use.

Great content + Good Backlinks = Success in SEO.

Google doesn't want you building 'links' to rank in Google.

    They want you sending traffic.

So if you get out there and focus on creating content and linking back to your site from relevant sites, 2 things are likely to happen. Number 1, you'll get more traffic to your site and Number 2 Google will reward you with more traffic.

Fantasy land idea aint it? The good news is, if you get out there and send a diversity of links to your sites, google will still reward you with rankings. Just don't overspam with one technique or they may likely catch on and kick you to the curb like so many others have experienced.

Not sure why people are fixated on external links like that's the only thing Google looks at. Sure quality external links are important, but you can piggyback off another internal page with a good link profile for a relevant keyword. You don't have to build external links for every single keyword/page your trying to rank.

I have heard that SEO was 70% off page 30% on page for the amount of impact it has on rankings.

    Does that sound right?
