Site ranking, but all of a sudden lost ranking. I am confused as hell.

I started a new site recently. I was already ranking for some of my keywords. Had around 40 pages or so all indexed.

But tonight as I was checking my ranking I notice all my rankings are gone. I check Google, but my site is still indexed. I check Google WMT, it shows no warning or any critical issues. Yet, when I check index status, it shows 0.

The funny thing is that WMT was showing all pages indexed until yesterday, but now when I look at the over time graph, it shows zero from as far back as I can see.

I should mention that I haven't build any backlinks to this new site as I just wanted to go the content route. The only thing I did was sharing my posts on my social networking accounts and a few PR announcing the site going live.

I am trying to look at my setting and sitemap to see if there is any error there. So far, nothing.

Anybody has any idea what the problem may be?... Is it de-indexed for some reason, but Google hasn't completely de-indexed it? Wouldn't WMT send a message if and when they de-index a site?...

I thought the site was de-indexed for some reason, but again, I checked on Google search and it shows the site as usual. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Ok so, I checked more of my urls and it seems they are all indexed, its just they have lost ranking. I am guessing its the normal new site ranking dance. But that still doesn't explain the index numbers on GWT!?...

Is anyone seeing this as well?...

It can take awhile for search to get updated.

Is there something that got tweaked, like noindex
    settings or server issues?

Did you change preferred version from www to non-www?

Is it a brand new domain, or old one? Domains are like a box
of chocolates. You never know what your going to get.

Not building at least one backlink could be the problem.

Do you have canonical issues? Mixing up google to just
give up? Or redirecting to useless pages? Bad trys
    at html5 settings?

I'm just listing a bunch off the top of my head...

Getting back to links. Sometimes a new site needs a kick.
If not, it can go out pretty quick.

    Tweet something, post on FB.

I have rarely heard this much, if at all, but steamrolling a site
is actually what needs to be done. Too many people are
loathe to start building backlinks. Good, solid ones should be
    done ASAP.

Google might have said, hmmm, why bother?

Edit: Okay, saw next post. Still, some issues above may be there.

      Hey Paul,

Thanks for taking time to reply.

Yeah, I agree about building a few links to get the site rolling, which is why I do bookmark each new post, and I also released a few PR when I first launched the site. I am also starting to submit to a few good directories.

Let me try to answer the issues you raised:

Is there something that got tweaked, like noindex
      settings or server issues?
No, nothing has changed in that regard.

Did you change preferred version from www to non-www?
Yes, but I did that in the first few days of the site going live. It is now almost 2 months old.

Is it a brand new domain, or old one?
      Brand new domain.

Do you have canonical issues? Mixing up google to just
give up? Or redirecting to useless pages? Bad trys
      at html5 settings?
No, I have all that set the right way. Plus, it was all working and I didn't change anything recently anyway.

In the mean time I have been doing some reading and I am leaning more towards the famous "Google Dance with new sites" thing. But then why would every single ranking (site has 45+ pages each targeting a keyword and they were all ranking on 1st and 2nd page) be gone at the same time?...

I would think the "Dance" would take effect on page by pages basis and not sitewide, but maybe I am wrong.

If your pages are indexed & no junk links, I'm sure it's fine (new site).

I don't look at GWT very often, that data is usually very slow at updating (defiantly not real time data).

Ok, Upon digging a bit deeper, I see this in my Google WMT:

    "
When we tested a sample of the URLs from your Sitemap, we found that some of the URLs were unreachable. Please check your webserver for possible misconfiguration, as these errors may be caused by a server error (such as a 5xx error) or a network error between Googlebot and your server. All reachable URLs will still be submitted."

But this sitemap is only the category sitemap. I am using YoastWordPress SEO which create site map for pages, posts and categories. My pages and posts sitemap are fine, but the category one has the issue mentioned above.

So, the day of the site losing all its ranking coincide with the day Google WMT detected this sitemap problem. I am wondering if these two are somehow related?...

I think not, since the site map for posts and page don't have any issues. But I just thought I would share this piece of info in case I am missing something here.

I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Use Google XML Sitemap Plugin. I think it is the best plugin related to solving your problem.

Another new development in case anyone is interested.

I was of course keeping track of my rankings, and as I mentioned all my top ranking were gone. There was just 10-15 posts were left ranking which dropped from 1st page to 9th-10th page etc.

Today, as I am looking at my ranking, I notice something strange. The keywords I was targeting each post with, are now ranking (not 1st page but in top 100), but the pages that are ranking for those keywords are all jacked up.

For example, my about page is ranking for 2 keywords from 2 other posts.

Another example: Blue widget post is ranking for the keyword "red widget" while red widget post is not ranking for it. This is happening with all 10-15 keywords that still have rankings in the 1st 100 pages.

It just seems weird, specially considering that until a few days ago, all the right posts were ranking for the right keywords.

What do you guys make of this?... It seems like G is shuffling my site, but I really don't know. I am kind of confused here as I have never seen that.
