So, how advanced is Google Places yet?

A competitor of my mine has 10 reviews on their listing which are BLATANTLY fake 5 star reviews.

I supposed reviews are difficult to verify.
Will this guy face a penalty in time or is Places still a developing practice?

Chances are like 90% that he won't face a penalty.
The worst thing that can happen is they remove the reviews. But if you know what you're doing, you can stop that from happening.

One of my sites, has 20+ fake google reviews. The worst that has happened over the last year is I lost 3 and had to replace them. The reason I lost those 3 reviews is I became lazy. I rushed them (you should never do a bunch of reviews at the same time) and they came from another country lol.

But what I can say undeniably 100% for sure. It is easy as hell to fake google reviews. It is easy to do the same for yelp and any other listing just gets easier and easier. The only difference with the way I do it now (aside from local proxies and outsourcing the posting) is that I take A LOT of time writing each review. So there is no way in hell you could read my reviews and think "they sound fake". They are intentionally manufactured to come off very real. The storylines, the specifics, I criticize myself, they sound realer than real reviews do.
