Penguin penalty question

I bought a domain with a lot of footer links. The previous owner was a theme creator and 99% of the backlink profile was something like "Theme Created by randomword"
It has about 90k backlinks from 400 domains.

I want to redirect this domain to one of my health related sites and I don't know if it's a good thing to do.
If I will do the 301 redirect, will I get a penguin penalty only for that "randomword" keyword or for all the other keywords that I'm using on my site?

If you already bought the domain I guess all you can do is try...
    Good luck!

  • Alaltaieri,

This is one of the pitfalls of buying used domains. If there are already a lot of links pointed at it and they are not from sites similar to the one you are applying the domain to, then you are kind of out of luck. As lori mentions, you can certainly try it. My feeling is that the worst that could happen is that those links don’t count very much for you. Google will look at those links, see that they appear to be showing people who a theme creator is when in actuality they lead to a health website and they discredit them.

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

@TheContentAuthority thank you for your answer but this is not what I asked. I'm sure the links will count since they are footer links on hundreds of high pr domains(up to pr5), even if they are not from my niche.

The problem is I don't want to harm my main site, that's why I'm asking first here.
My site has about 3k backlinks with a lot of anchor text variation. This one that I one to redirect has 90k backlinks with 99% same anchor text and I will probably be hit by penguin after redirecting.

I just want to know if I will be penalized for that "randomword" or for all the keywords that I'm ranking for.

What a waste of precious time and money. Why should you buy over optimized domains and then re-direct them to your money site?

90k ''page'' links are far more different than ''domain'' links , which means that you may even pass it without a penality, but what's the point of the whole thing?

The point is that domains contain few hundreds homepage High PR Backlinks.

Also, the domain cost me $3(privacy included) and 5 minutes of my time. So, I don't get your post. It's a very powerful domain and I'm only afraid of anchor text diversity effect after redirecting.

Just do it already. No amount of theorizing on a forum can help you. Experiment and find out what really happens.

lol @pointing a 3$ spammed overoptimized domain on your money site. No wonder there's still an insane market of crap on this forum. If you have to experiment at least use a trash domain.

It doesn't matter how much I paid for that domain. It was free to register and I used some godaddy coupon.

Spammed? Do you know how spam backlinks look like?. It has footer backlinks from legit sites that are using the theme. That's all. Almost every important theme contain this kind of backlinks in footer.

Based on your logic, if millions of sites are having in footer "Powered by Wordpress" that means wordpress.com is a crap overoptimized spammed domain.

Be careful of a dropped domain that has footer links. Sounds like a slap waiting to happen.

My logic makes perfectly sense as doing something like this on a money site is simply stupid. Wordpress is wordpress, a theme provider is a theme provider, a health site with 90k footer links is spam.

Anyway I'm not here against 301's or grey hat stuff, hell even black hat is fine if dosed properly, but an old overoptimized domain with 90k footer links is simply something that wouldn't even cross my mind to re-direct to a decent site like this. Simply because you bought it for 3$ it doesn't mean you have to use it on your sites

I am guessing the footer links are all branded links? If that is the case, I wouldn't expect there to be an issue 301 redirecting it to your money site. That being said, to be on the safe side, I would 301 redirect to a test site to see what effect, if any, it has on the test site's SERPs before sending it to your money site.

Worst case scenario, you can use it as a pumper site and link to your money site OR build a second money site on it targeting the same niche (build multiple domains to domain lucrative niches).

I am guessing the domain has a pretty decent PA/DA. Congratulations on a good buy.
