hey guys i have a pretty newbie question but i would love the help. i am trying to see the search volume of a keyword in the google adwords keyword tool. it says the keyword has a broad search of over 9 million, but it has a exact search of only 8 thousand. that is a huge difference. so i would like to know what is the more important number? at first i was happy since it has a broad search volume of over 9 million but am i really going to get even close to 9 million? or is the maximum potential of that keyword just 8 thousand per month?

i guess i am trying to find out whether the broad search or the exact search volume is the real maximum number of people are searching for this keyword. i would appreciate any help, thank you.

Exact monthly searches is what you look at, and even than they could be wrong. You may rank number 1 and not see anywhere near 8,000, or you may see well over that number.

Keyword tools should be used as general guideline, to give you a ball park number of what to expect.

Bear in mind that the search numbers fluctuate and it is a metric to give you an idea on a direction to go. The important thing to understand is the total number of searches per month in comparison to the total number of pages that are indexed under a particular keyword. Understanding the total number of sites indexed will illustrate your total amount of competition and the number of searches helps you understand the demand or interest visitors have for a particular keyword.

Only look at Exact & Local.

Exact - is indeed exact keyword traffic numbers, keep in mind that's a rough estimate like Nest said, but it's a rough estimate of a 12 month average. Keep in mind that seasonal keywords can might not see much traffic out of season (ex: Halloween, Christmas, summer, winter, etc...).

Local - is your countries search volume. Google has a country search for just about every country in the world, you'll never rank #1 for every single 100+ country search in the world, doubtful you would even need to rank Global, unless your selling to countries like Mongolia (seriously).

This is a list of Global search sites:

An exact match count of [8000] is actually pretty good...especially if the keyword has some 'commercial' intent (meaning that those searchers are looking to buy stuff).

You can add up the exact match search count for ALL the related keywords...I'm sure there are close variations of that keyword that you see...

Add up all those exact match numbers and if you're over [15000] in local searches, and the keyword indicates some 'commercial/buyer' intent, its probably a good keyword.

But before you optimize for it, check the 1st page of Google for competing results. If you see Web 2.0 sites ranking like ehow, squidoo, blogspot, wordpress, yahoo answers, forums, etc.....then you can be sure that its an easy keyword to dominate.

If you see a lot of multi-million dollar corporate brands on the 1st page, it may be tougher to crack.

In general though, using Youtube and Press Releases can help you penetrate competitive markets, but be ready to put in a consistent effort.

      All the best,

This doesn't tell anything about difficulty of a keyword.

You guys are leaving way too much money on the table with your consistent insistence of using exact match search values. Never mind.
