Primary Keywords vs. Secondary Keywords

Hello all! Niche site newbie here.

I've been following these threads and others for awhile now and finally feel confident enough to try my hand at niche sites. I've targeted some keywords but I'm not exactly sure of the direction I should take in terms of primary/secondary keywords and content creation. To help illustrate, I'll use a hypothetical example:

Say I find that the key word "sparkle socks" has 5000 searches and low competition. Say also that "grandma socks" has similar stats. Do I go ahead and make two separate sites targeting each individual type of sock or do I make an umbrella site and make separate posts (or pages) for the different types of socks. If so, what do I do if I can't find a good umbrella keyword with low competition. Do I go ahead and use something like "interesting socks" (assume it has low traffic and low competition) as the keyword for the home page? I assume the homepage would look something like a marketplace which would then direct you to other types of socks.

Thanks again for any help. I've found this forum to be exceedingly useful and filled with really great people. Have a nice weekend!

Go dip your hands into the water. Experiment and test, see the results and learn from experience. IMO, it would be best to write naturally and for humans and not the Search engines. Example post would be The Ten Best Socks for Gift to Grandma this Christmas.

Just depends on how much time you want to invest into your blogs. For instance, if you have plenty of time to spread your attention over ten blogs, then you should go that route. Otherwise, stick to the one catch all blog and post there.

Why should you create different sites for similar keywords? You should create different pages for the keywords.
