Looking at the google adword search per month results for a term such a keyword phrase such as ....
weight loss..

There is huge variety of results on how many searches. A few are listed below. ... at 5,000,000 searches "weight loss" is to broad to optimize for...but is free weight loss at 110,000 good or is that still to many?

Other factors must be considered...but in general how many searches per month do you feel is enough to optimize for. How many search results would be to many results to optmize for?

Weight loss......5,000,000

Healthy weight loss........60,500

Free weight loss..............110,000

Weight loss results............6,600

Think about how much time and money you have to devote to this. Sometimes you can do very well with a less competitive term if there are at least several dozen searches being done everyday, and you can reach your goals sooner. More competitive terms may take a lot longer. I can remember a customer that wanted to optimize for "tickets" and it took us about 2 years to get there.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Are you planning on making money with this? I hope so... but you wont through the keyword "weight loss". Here's why.

    1. At 5mil searches your competition is MASSIVE. And like dvduval said, to rank for a term like this will take you YEARS. Don't even bother with that $hit unless you got time to kill.

    2. It's too broad. It's not a buyer keyword, its more of a "hmm let's see whats available on the web for weight loss, maybe some good articles will come up" kinda keyword...

    3. ...which brings me to my 3rd point, there is more than enough FREE info on weight loss that's actually good, so you need a product that's better than most and offers ridiculous value.

If I were to pick a keyword from that list, it would be "weight loss results". Not only is it more targeted but you can spin it for a product.

"See FAST weight loss results with (X) training program"

I haven't checked it using google adwords tool but I'm guessing the PPC competition would be fierce. Still... you can rank top for a keyword that's searched 6000 times no problem.

In most cases I generally start looking at searches that yield about 40,000 to 50,000 per month.

So If I found that weight loss had 5,000,000 searches a month I would try to find a long-tail keyword within that niche that yields the amounts I mentioned. I find with good SEO and some PPC content advertising I can begin to rank within a few months while generating about 1000 - 2000 uniques per month during that time.

"weight loss results" - It does have over 6000 broad searches a month but 480 exact phrase match. In terms of the keyword itself you could get in the top 10 no worries.

Number 4 in Google for this term is a site called resultsweightloss.com which has a double listing courtesy of an internal page on the site, thereby occupying both positions 4 & 5 at the time of writing. This particular site only has a couple of backlinks so you could slam dunk into the top 5.

Some of the people reading this will now think the same thing. C'est La Vie. It's getting hot in here

    Hope this helps.

Very nicely put dean. As to the question at hand with the keyword research I do I will normally only choose keywords with a search volume in the range of 1000-15000 this is so that I caan highly target those. If I was to use ppc for these 3 word sets It would allow me to set my bid for the traffic around .2 vs my normal price set of .45 It also insures me to get top position for that set of keywords. I agree with dan to you can take out the person sitting at the top spot. Just by building a few backlinks and having some absolutle content that google loves. In the absoulte content be sure to have yourkey word groups sets in your page at least 5 total times to start with adding more later if it doesnt get top placement you will also want to expose a few of your other keywords to a fully oprimized page.

      Hope that helps

I would say to go for long tail keywords unless you are a serious marketer, willing to sacrifice much for SEO purposes.
