How to Outrank Major Retailers

I'm considering picking a physical product for my niche. The top 10 pages are all major retailers like amazon, walmart, lowes but they don't look very competitive at all, the pages have very low PR, low backlinks, etc

Is it still very difficult to rank over these major retailers despite the fact that they have so few links coming into the actual product page.

Has anyone successfully ranked a physical product over amazon, walmart, samsclub etc? If so how difficult was it?

Thanks for any insight

    Hi,

I have worked as an SEO for a pretty big online retailer in New Zealand, who managed to outrank Amazon for specific brand searches in the UK, so yes very possible.

Do you have an established website or are you starting from scratch? Amazon and other websites like that have a lot of natural authority, however if your website is established and more relevant i.e more specifically about a certain product I see no reason why you would much trouble.

Obviously a brand new website will take a while to gain trust and authority.

    Hope this helps

Do the normal On page SEO and then analyse the competitions backlink structure.

Build more relevant high PR etc back links than the number 1 slot.

Typically if you see Amazon at the number 1 slot, it's generally very easy to beat. I do it with Amazon review sites all the time.

Most authority sites don't optimize pages for a specific keyword. That's where you come in.

You need a tight campaign of good on/off page SEO. That should be enough to get you off the ground.

I have built niche sites surrounding specific physical products and have ranked them with ease. A few links from high pr blog would do the trick. The reason they rank is because of the DA and if you have an EMD that provides decent info on the product then it becomes only a child's play to rank the site. Been there, done that, in a week

Welcome to post Penguin 2.0 Google SERPs

Overall site/brand authority is playing a much bigger part in the ranking system than how optimised an individual page is. This is making it much much harder to rank for these product searches that the big boys who are gobbling them up effortlessly...

Obviously optimising individual pages in terms of quality backlinks and on-page factors is still important and will help. It's just that this won't have the same effect in changing your ranking against major brands anymore. The best thing you can do is try and build site authority as well as page authority to penetrate these rankings.

You may be able to compete on the Panda algorithm side of things. I.e. if you can offer lower bounce rates, higher user engagement than the big boys Google will push you up the SERPs as this signals higher relevance to the search term as you're giving the users what they want.

it certainly is harder now to compete against the big authority sites, so you have to go for larger, authoritative site, dont even think about doing a small, exact match domain approach. Optimize, but don't over optimize the relevant page, and get something sticky about it - so that users stay on the site for a bit of time.
