I bought an expired domain that is related to energy saving.

But my plan is to setup a new blog and write new posts on it but of a different niche e.g business personal property.

How do you think of the long impact on this blog? Will the new blog get banned by google? Will the new blog benefit from the expired domain name?

I hv checked all the backlinks... 80% of the backlinks are pointing to the domain with domain as the anchor text.

Please help as i have bid $200 for it. Just dun wanna waste the $$$

As long as the domain name is a brand instead of actual keywords then you should be fine.

Most people are re-theming expired domains, works great, no one can say if it lasts forever.

If you really worry you can always restore the old site, there are services out there that restore the complete site for $15 for you, then with some creativity you should be able to link to your own site.

      Hi Nik0,

Do you have any names or recommendations? I'm interested in a service like this... It would save me a lot of time.

Search in Google, right now I can't find it anymore tbh.

hello nik0, thanks for the reply.

i feel like restoring the old site using archive.org but the expired domain is an authority site backed by the government.

i am worried that the US government will come after me.

You can always restore the site in the same niche and redesign it to give it a facelift but keep the backlinks since they will still be relevant. You should be safe.

I mostly repuporse unrelated PR sites as blog networks/link networks.

Then i repurpose niche related and generic sites for actual money sites.

Most of my sites stay up and retain their power, some do not. I dont have a formula for predicting that. However, i have noticed if u don't act fast that increases the chance of a site losing its PR/authority. Hope that helps.

You could lose some of the good links the site has now if you don't build a quality site that is at least some way related to the the sites previous niche. If you do things right you can have a nice site and buying the expired domain will be worth it.

I typically, but not always, keep my expired domain names in the same or similar niche to what they were originally but it depends on a few variables.

One thing to check out is whether the pages that link to this domain are updated at all - some sites have a "last updated on 23/04/06" or if it is a news site they'll almost certainly have the publish date somewhere on the pages. If I think that these pages are effectively archived and will never be looked at or changed then I'm happier to switch the domain to a new niche or industry safe in the knowledge that the links will remain.

Also, the better the domain, the more I am likely to keep it the same as what it used to be as it's more of an investment.
