getting back links to a post or to a category?

Hello,
i have noticed that my wordpress posts are ranked higher then the categories.
i`m going to exchange some links and i would like to know if i should link them to a specific post or is it better to link them to the main category?
the problem is that the categories doesn't have much content - it just show the 10 recent posts.
