You ever had one of those days where everything goes to he$$?

I forgot to pay my host & domain (HG/Namecheap), my domain Google Cache shows a parked page with text about organic fruit (lmao). The same site is totally gone from the SERPs for my main keyword.

Namecheap is still trying to resolve. Hostgator is awesome, they're the ones that said something must be wrong with my domain name which they're correct, I didn't pay the bill.

[edit]
Just now checked the domain again & my site is back like normal, now I'll wait & see what Google does with the SERPs.

My Index page has a history of getting reindexed daily, hopefully there's not too much damage.

did you not get any notifications from Namecheap letting you know the domain was about to expire? Or did you forget about those too? :p

how long has the domain been dropped?

I read somewhere google gives at least a max of 2 weeks for a site being down before the down time affects the rankings?

I usually get an email from HG, not sure If it went into the spam folder or what.

It's been down less than 24 hours, I was looking at incoming traffic/keywords last night on the WP Admin.

Trust me, they don't care how long the ranked page has been down. I still have almost 300 internal pages indexed with the old web pages cached, so that's all good. I'm sure the index page will bounce back once G crawls the page again which will most likely happen in the next 24 hours, the page has a history of getting reindexed daily.

Sounds like more than a bad day. Your hosting or domain must have been down for a few days.

No, it was all good last night, the site was working fine. I just happened to go to the site today to get a couple of files for another project I'm working on.

Ah bummer. Reserved the domain and setup hosting on the same day then. Yeah less than a day should not have that much of a permanent affect.

    Check this out.

I went back to my main site & dropped 3 links pointing to the site that was down for a day. The site that was down went right back to it's original SERP position #2 for my main keyword, my large site is #1 (same keyword). That's all good.

    Here's what's messed up.

After I added the links on the main site, I did a search in Chrome Incognito for my main keyword, I copied/pasted the keyword from a page title which has each first letter of the keyword as uppercase (Keyword1 Keyword2). If I do the same search with all lowercase letters (keyword1 keyword2) I show up at the bottom of page #2 in Google SERPs.

I've never seen Google be picky about the letter case (uppercase/lowercase).

    I guess they're still updating...

I'll wait it out, I only dropped the 3 backlinks because Google will usually update the SERPs when I edit my main sites Index page, I wanted to bump the site that was down rather than wait a day.

I guess Google was still updating when I first checked upper/lower case versions of the same keyword, now 12 hours later I rank for both versions like I was before I screwed up my host (bill).

It's all good...even Michael Jordan had his off days!

The upside is you take your business serious enough to catch these errors before they are 1-2 weeks old.

I'll bet you scheduled yourself a reminder for the next time...didn't you??:p

I have my G Live Beta in a window somewhere, always open.
I know how much I should have made and by what time each day.
I know my weekly traffic patterns like clockwork.
    I'm a sick puppy though.

If it happens in my Casino. I know about it....

Haha yes I dun goof'd like this once or twice...but it was with hosting. Longest I was down was two days and it didn't effect my serps. Maybe it's like a double edged sword getting re-indexed so much in this case.

    Sucks, Yukon...I feel your pain.

We just had someone sell their site through us and, during the process of the transfer, the site was down for a few days and lost ranking. We stepped in to help them fix the situation and (luckily) the site bounced back a few days later...no long-term damaged done, fortunately.
