My sudden drop from $900 a month to $350...and going lower!

I was having a great start to the year. Each month I kept the momentum going with my adsense earnings. I was not doing anything blackhat. January was $200, Feb $300, March $500, April $900, May $700, June $700, and July is looking like I will land around the $350 mark.

I started aquiring sites on Flippa around February. I spent 5k on 6 sites. I also had one of my own sites that I designed that made up half this revenue.

My earnings seemed to peak with the latest algo update.

I signed up for the learn with adsense program and made the mistake of cracking a few jokes on the message board about the presenters (Google employees) ....and filled in a few forms with my publisher ID to be possibly used in the course as an example. BIG MISTAKE.

That was 4 weeks ago....the following week I was smart priced. I was still getting the same traffic, however my clicks were only paying a third of what they had been. Obviously I had a manual review and they did not like what they saw. That's cool.....I just wish they would tell me what was wrong, what site they had an issue with. Now my main money site took a major hit along with all the others.....all of them went down 60%. Perhaps one of the sites I purchased had some issues ....links, whatever....something they did not like. One site did have some lame content on half the pages.....I pulled adsense off it right away hoping to reverse the smart pricing.

The bleeding has not stopped Today I see my main money site....half my earnings has dropped from number one to number 13 for my main keyword that drives 40 percent of my traffic.

I obviously pissed one of the nerds off at big G.

Fellow warriors, do not make the same mistake as I did. If you have a good thing going, keep your trap shut and do not risk a manual review from big G.

Back to the drawing board.

Are you sure your smart priced, I'm seeing the same drop in CTR because the Ads that Google is delivering on the sites are junk, it's the same junk they show on Youtube, massive amount of unrelated Ads.

I did 4x earnings this year compared to last year (Nov. 2012 - July 2013).

I do agree, many of the ads are junk lately. I assumed that was due to the fact that I got a message in my adsense account to add a third ad unit to each page to increase my revenue. I only applied this change to my main money site. Right away I started getting junk ads. My experience in the past was changing the location or adding an ad unit can make a huge impact on the ads being served to the site. It usually takes a month before the ads are consistent and producing. That's why I hate making tweaks to the ad units.

I block many of the common repeating unrelated ads.......Google self ads included. I see they keep on throwing up youtube ads now.....I should block that one too.

I have other low traffic sites that pay off nicely when they do get clicks. I did not touch the ad units on these sites. Those nice clicks also dropped by 60%, therefore I am chalking it up to the whole account being smart priced.

I have been at this now for just over 2.5 years. This is a tough game to learn.

      Not giving up yet.

You should never give it up.....

Try to know the reason of drop in earning.

As you mentioned that you bought site from Flippa.. it may be that seller may have removed some strong links..

My recommendation may sound a little weird:

Build and promote ONE site at a time.

Trust me dude, I've been there: owning a dozen "websites" and struggling to monetize them with Adcents.

You've had some success and that's awesome. Now cut your losses and start building one amazing site.

I would look at the sites your have acquired in more detail, especially the traffic. Honestly, many sell sites that they think could be penalized in the near future. I have been caught out a few times. These were mainly large sites with a lot of duplicate content. They would perform very well for the first few months and then traffic would suddenly collapse.

I'm interested in an update on this. I've noticed that one of my sites is showing ridiculous ads, which used to be very targeted until about a month ago. Now the ads are so generic.

That's the problem with relying on SEO.

I had a few websites up that made some easy maxbounty commissions 100% with SEO.

    Did it last?

    Of course not.

And I believe, the smaller your website, the less "longterm" SEO you'll maintain.

Just my $.02, not a stone cold SEO expert.

(But, my experience should be worth at least something).

Thanks, but I'm not sure what SEO has to do with this. My traffic comes from targeted sources and is doing well in that regard. The problem lies with the ads being shown on my site when visitors get there. The ads aren't targeted enough, thus a lower CTR compared to previous months.

Yes that is the only reason I can guess.
