    I've always been told that guest posts are better, especially when they're on the home page, while having a link the blogroll would be considered spammy as all of a sudden Google will find tons of links to your site.

    Any clarifications on this?

    Guest Post - definitely.

    A blog roll link is nice but a great guest post will go viral especially when it's written on a popular, high traffic blog. That means residual backlinks for you on autopilot.

    Guest post all day long. We all know that Google loves content and a few quality guest posts can really help. Blogroll links I would stay away from as they look spammy and paid for.

    I'm a blogroll hunter.
    Lately I have seen huge success with them.

    So yeah, I would go for blogroll link unless you can make a guest post without "author box" and link that looks like editorial.

    Guest post looks naturally so I prefer guest posts. I write my own content for guest posting websites.

    I think each variant has it advantages.
    With a blogroll, you can squeeze more information onto less real estate + less trouble for you; with guest posts you add more value to the page.
    It also depends on the site, its layout, what else is there...
