    Not an expert on this but I would say the second is one way of identifying competitive keywords. One way to tell if a keyword with high volume search has competition is to use Google's Insight tool (may have changed the name). Sorry can't be more help, maybe one of the more experienced members will have a definitive answer.

    Yeah definitely use the Google Keyword tool to find high paying ads.

    Generally speaking, the expensive keywords are the ones where you are selling something:

    plumbers
    car insurance
    medication
    SEO related services
    and so on
