How Important is anchor text in backlink.?

How Important is anchor text in backlink anymore. two years ago. it was, but now that google has added co-citation and a lot spammers has figured out the anchor text trick, I am wondering if it's that crucial anymore.

    It's important to keep it looking natural. Google can figure out what keywords are relevant without the need for the anchor text to spell it out for them.

    Everyone has their own opinion, but I'm finding what works for me at the moment is 5-10% keyword anchor text, about 50% branded anchor text (domain name), about 25% URL and the rest a mix of generic 'click here' types as well as related keywords.

      It's still very important but you have to have lots of variations not just using your main keywords. You could use domain keywords, naked links, generic terms and LSI keywords such as this.

        Although, if you look at a lot of the churn and burn sites, anchor text spam is still alive and well. At least when it comes to temporary rankings.

    Go for brand. There is evidence to suggest that brand anchor text is actually a ranking factor...think about it...it makes perfect sense.... Also dont be focused just on follow links...make sure you have a healthy portion of nofollow in there

    What about if I now want to change the anchor text of old backlinks which have exact match keywords included into them and change them into brand, naked or junk anchor texts?

    Would the change still be taken into consideration or would I need to simply add new links with new good anchor texts to balance the backlink profile?

    Also, would the weight of those backlinks would be the same after the change?

    Anchor text is a way of telling Google what kind of stuff can be found on your site. On whether it is crucial or not- for now it does work if you are not over optimizing links with anchor texts

    Backlinks worked and still working well even i have seen lots of eg that people still able to rank websites with just a few high PR links specially in medium/low competition keywords area for eg.

    And personally i beleive in theory that backlink will stay working as they are part of core algo of any search engine.
