Hi,

Just been doing some keyword research and found a great keyword that according to google gets search around 2,400 times a month.

The domain for that keyword is not taken and there are 24000 competeing sites in quotes.

Amazon are sat at the top of page 1. is it possible to outrank them?

Thanks
Steve

Amazon are tough to beat, dig deeper for longer tail variations of the keyword.

Really, 99% of the people already know Amazon and if they wanted something from there, they would have went there. If you can get number #2/3, with a little different title, you should get a good amount of the traffic.

It's certainly possible to outrank them. In my experience, Google places a lot of confidence in sites that have the keyword as part of the domain name. If all your other SEO tactics - quality backlinks, keyword phrase in the title, anchor text with the keyword (for incoming and outgoing links), etc., etc. - are in place, you should be fine. At worst you could probably expect a listing in the top 5.

I'm not going to say, "Yeah! You'll definitely beat them!" I don't know what strategies the other first page SERP sites have put into work. I do know that I've obtained first and second listings on Google's first page for some competitive terms in the past largely because my domain name included the keywords being searched. The only other SEO principles I had in place were optimized title, h1, and meta tags - and your term isn't competitive (24k other sites, right?).

Oh in quotes?! That's a bit of a different story because not many people search using quotes. If you search without the quotes and less than ... say 500k sites show up, I'd say get very happy. Again, be wary of the SEO tactics they're using. It's not just a numbers game (low numbers doesn't mean it will be easy). See what the competition is doing and do the same. With the added benefit of the words in the domain, you'll be considered higher quality to Google.

While it is possible it may be quite difficult. I would consider using a different keyword.

I would say you can definitely will out rank them within matter of months or days. Amazon probably didn't even mean to rank high for that keyword anyways. Was just a product they were trying to sell.

I concur. Amazon easily ranks well for any page they put up because it's already a popular site - so it gets indexed quite often. Therefore, it will appear early, be found early, be linked to early and more often than others, and get high rankings because of these factors and more. However, you can beat them if you simply try.

The people saying it will be tough to do have never done it and are too scared to try. They are simply posting their assumptions.

No need to beat amazon... just be in the top 5 of google is a good achievement.

If you only have 24,000 competing sites, this term may not be one that is highly optimized for, and amazon may just be there with some proper title tags, and some internal links that helped pushed it to the top of google. But with some effort on your part, you can definitely outrank amazon here with more backlinks count than amazon.

2,400 is not that much and you say that amazon is on top of that keyword? I don't think it's worth it :/

Don't forget to see who your "true" competitors are for a search term (from an SEO point of view) use the following in Google:

      inanchor:keyword phrase here
That will bring up results for sites that have anchor text pointing to the site which means (9 times out of 10) they are actively trying to rank for that term.

Just because they rank - doesnt mean they are trying to.

Nice tip! Thanks a lot Hutz.

@ TheHutz: is the inanchor: a google command? Seems like a good idea, but not working with me.

Hi Joe, yeah I think it's Google only. And make sure not to put a space after the colon so it is literally:

      inanchor:keyword phrase
Hopefully you get some joy. I cant link to any examples yet as I'm still too new
