On page and off page optimization are both part of SEO. but applying these techniques effectively are more important aspect to do better. copailibilty of website with search engine play a vital role in optimization. here comes quality content, keywords density, user friendly structure, Url canonicalization, user reviews, quality link building, linking with trusted and authority sites.

To become an expert of SEO, it will take you years of observation, reading, practicing. Because the form of SEO is dynamic and it is changing almost everyday. Though the basics are the same.

After On Page optimization, I would like to say the most important part of SEO is backlink building which falls into the off page optimization.

Content and backlinks these two are very important..

But you have to know how to do it..

content = fresh and quality content so that it would be shared too..
backlinks = should look natural to Google...

    2 things really:

    - High quality content
    - Links that are able to pass authority/juice

And prevent over optimizing in the broadest sense of the word

Could you help me explaining what does the word "pass" mean in this message Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: A reminder about selling links that pass PageRank
      No irony.

Well I would ignore that webmaster message right away. If we have to listen to every single thing that Google tells us then there is no SEO, All the large SEO companies use private network sites to rank their clients. If you want to do 100% whitehat then that's fine but then you need to achieve links by publishing link bait (content that people love to link to out of their selves, and even then you need to push it by contacting site owners as waiting is wasting time and you can launch the greatest content ever but if no one knows that it exists then there won't be much sharing obvious).

It's always good to mix LSI keywords in your content of course, what I mean with over optimizing though is:

        - keyword stuffing, as in high kw density in your content (totally not needed)
        - having each keyword in img alt, h1, h2, h3, h3, h4, bold, underlined, italic
        - using the same keyword too often as anchor text

If you want people to link naturally then you better use a very good writer or provide very useful info.

For sites where you take care of the link building yourself (or outsource it) it's better to have good content as well but poor written content also still ranks these days but you never know with Google so better have it good right from the start.

Agree with you. In DEADLY competitive sectors you can't fight natural way. But my question was what does it mean "pass" in this webmaster message (stupid or hidden clever). Maybe to avoid too high link PR compared with your site PR?

    Important is Onpage seo first.
Have in mind some things like image alt tags and the % of your keywords and how unique are your article are super important factors.

The offpage then (you have to do a good Onseo to see the right results) is all about the strategy you follow. What kind of links you are about to create etc.etc.

    Good luck!

Hey, well on page and off page cover everything, so you need to make sure you've done a lot of research into SEO techniques. To be honest it's not something you can learn overnight, but if you create the right industry contacts then that's half the battle.

    Goodluck!

As you mentioned that you've already known about on-page and off-page activities then I'd not like to repeat this... For being a expert in SEO you must be expert on SMO (social media optimization) it's a complimentary strategy as far as I think.

A couple of major factors in addition to what has already been mentioned above as far as off-page is concerned are:

    1. Link velocity (the pace at which links are built); and

    2. Link diversity (the variety of anchor text backlinks)

I also agree with @koushikseo that social media is beginning to play a major factor in SEO (social signals).
