On Page SEO

Good Morning!

This is a bit frustrating. I've seen a lot about the importance of on-page SEO (and even had one person, selling something, tell me mine is bad. Okay.....), but no great guides on what constitutes great SEO. I use wordpress almost exclusively for my sites.
Most are generalities:
keyword in post title
keyword in first paragraph.
bold keyword,
etc. etc.

here's my question, has anyone done a great study with more of a .... formula?
Like:
what is the actual best keyword ratio
okay, inter-linking within the site is great - how much?
permalinks. I've been told to use %pagetitle%, but also to consider how google looks at your site as a hierachy, and should have %category%%pagetitle%
That would be a big structural change in my blog...
when you use your keyword, should it be bolded every time. shouldn't it also be italicized and underlined? Do you mix it up?
How often should you link to other articles?
how ofter should you link to a category, or a Page?

There's got to be a great guideline on all this....

    As you have already seen, there is a lot of ambiguity out there concerning the topics you mentioned. For example there aren’t really solid rules on a lot of these things. Others may disagree but for example there isn’t a solid rule that says if you have x amount of your keyword in an article, that is the magic formula. Matt Cutts talks about keyword density in this video and explains that there isn’t any “magic” number,


    Ultimately JP, you need to think less about these details and focus more on creating something that people will love and want to share. Those are the results that rank well. Every day Google is pursuing new ways to deliver relevant and quality results to its users. That means technical things like density and keyword placement and whether or not a term is bolded will mean less than if a piece of content was interacted with by thousands of users or if a domain consistently produces good content.
