Adwords: Numbers vs Reality

Do the numbers seem inflated in terms of actual traffic you are able to pull from exact match search strings?
Or is it just me?
I'm not talking about short strings but 4-5 word strings where you actually rank for supposed tens of thousands of monthly searches.
I guess there's a contextual factor. Still, seems like there'd at least be more random traffic. What gives?
