Do hyphens matter in your domain?

I know this might sound like a stupid question, buy do hyphens matter when you're trying to rank a site?

I used to believe no they don't, but I don't know now...

I have 6 local sites for different locations, so I know that this already isn't a fair comparison, with different competition, etc.

But here's the thing, of the 3 that are ranking in the 1st page, all of them don't have any hyphens in the domains. But for the other 3 that are on the 4th page+ all have a hyphen in there somewhere.

Now I know that this really doesn't do this problem any justice for the hyphens because there are so many variables in ranking a site, but I just wanted to hear other people's opinion about this. Do you feel that a hyphen have interfered with your rankings?

I just started a thread on this subject - you might find useful advice on it.

Personally, I feel like it doesn't correlate enough to really matter... there are so many other BIGGER leverage points (IE, link building) and variables (like you mentioned) that you can make most anything work.

However, with that being said, I'd much rather use a brand name domain to rank these days, compared to including keywords in the URL - for the record, I still own both...

use of hyphens in URL between two words are matter in ranking. Search engine give your more weight-edge as compared to simple URL. You check top ecommerce or new website, where they use hyphens in URL. So, hyphens is important.

    Hyphens don't matter for SEO.

As far as user experience the guy without the hyphen will most likely get all the direct domain search, I doubt traffic will remember adding hyphens to a domain search.
