SEO - what it the first thing to do to increase traffic

O.K.. so I added pluggins to Wordpress to do SEO optimization.

Now to promote the stie

... I could write articles and publish out on many sites
I could publish blogs to promote on the hosted blogging sites
I could purchase to get listings on a directory web site
I could pay to get dofollow links
I could pay to get a video on Yourtube
..... many others....

If, you had a site, where would you start? What builds organic traffic (a) the quickest (b) for the long term?

firstly get yourself some backlinks so that your site gets indexed quickly.
Add a site map to google webmaster tools. If its a blog then use pingomatic everytime you update it.
Contents is king so keep writing them articles and keep pinging.
ive heard directory submission is no longer any good so avoid it and look for high page rank or relevant backlinks.
Play an active role in your niche forums etc
add your signiture to forums with your link(hint hint)
keep it going and you will start to see results.
Dont buy links as if the company get caught you will also be penalized.

  The first thing is do proper onpage proper meta titls, description and keywords. then go for directory submission, link exchange. get blogs, articles published on almost daily basis. Go for forums add signatures according to your main keywords. But yes don';t go for paid links.

write some blog articles... socially bookmark them.. create some web 2.0 backlinks from the like of squidoo and weebly then create some articles for the directories with sig links in back to your blog articles.

  I follow a method similar to that mentioned in your reply Traffic Mystic and it gets me ranked on the first page for most of my keywords. And pretty quick too I might add.

Just forget about the traffic for the time being and keep on adding good content and traffic will come.

The first place I would to start a community and to get quick targeted traffic is via through forums and social networking sites. Those are the two sources that I most often go to for accumulating an audience.

  The quickest way to increase traffic right away in my experience is PPC. It has worked well on a couple of ecommerce sites I developed until the natural SEO rankings in google et al improved enough for organic traffic to be enough to support sales.

Also a combination of things everyone is saying. also remember to branch out to different things. say you're uploading videos to youtube. don't only do youtube, be sure to do as many free video sharing sites you can find/think of. and always be sure to put a link in the description. and if you're going to make blogs, fill them up with some real grade-A quality stuff.

I have to agree that content is so important. Having new and relitive content constantly comming up on the site is veryimportant so don't stop that.

Also create good quality backlinks and I have to agree that if you are creating a video or an article where your link is in the sig file then post it in as many locations that you can, not just one site.

Follow the above advice and you'll be fine

However, your question is "Whats the first thing to increase traffic?"

If I just wanted to increase traffic from the offset, I would go where the traffic already is.

That is, do a search for your niche + blog and + forums and participate with them. As mentioned before, have a link in your signature.

Don't actively go in there and promote. If you're participation is good, people will visit your site.

Get involved in sites that already have traffic and leach off of them (correctly and ethically).

That to me is the quickest and easiest way to increase traffic rather than rankings.

The best ways to increase traffic

Content is King:
Write relevant, interesting content for your website. Write some stories, articles, anything. Try for one new content page a week, more if you have time. Employ someone if you need to.
Social Bookmarking.
The latest and the best way to get high PR links.
Forum Posting.
Please make sure you don't spam any forum, you will get quality links from quality forums only if you don't spam and actually contribute...That will generate your tons of visitors

- Garner links from vendors, clients, business partners
- Garner links from other related sites
- Garner links through general directory entries, like Yahoo
- Garner links through specific directory entries, like a marketing services directory if you are a marketing consultancy
- Sponsor organizations and get acknowledgement through a link from their Web sites
- Create content and syndicate through RSS so that other sites will post the content contained within your RSS feed on their sites with a link back to your site.
- Participate in forums and other related social networks
- Garner links through Article marketing

  2. submit articles to eza, goarticles, article dashboard
  3. social bookmark your articles
  4. use socialmarker.com to social bookmark
  5. Find blogs in your niche to comment on
  6. Write a press release about your site/blog
  7. Find questions about your niche on yahoo answers and promote your site (don't spam or you will get banned).

First get it indexed. Then try to generate backlinks from high PR sites. Give updated contents and unique content.
