I am looking for the most traffic for a new site. In your opinion is it better to go with a forum or message board

Yes, it would help you get traffic if you are contributing to the message board and the message board is related to your niche with high traffic.

If you're consistently contributing to forums, then forums.

However, you can get pretty lucky at times with blog commenting. Commenting on recent posts from high traffic, niche-related blogs can generate a pretty decent amount of traffic. I've had multiple instances of a single comment bringing in a few hundred extremely targeted visitors over the course of a few days.

Getting direct traffic from forums is one of the many ways and for better results you need to create or experiment with appealing anchor text in sig. or body of the contents.

Unless the forum relates to your niche, don't bother trying to get a link back. You will not only miss the mark on direct traffic which would result from click throughs by other forum members, but Google won't really value those backlinks as highly coming from pages unrelated to the ones being linked to.

I wouldn't even add links in the posts themselves.

To the OP, just make sure the forum allows sigs. And that you're not posting brainless one-liners in order to get your sig seen. You'd be surprised how much quality traffic you can bring in, and the relationships that you can build, by being a helpful member of a high traffic forum.

You can drive traffic using forums and message boards if you do it consistently and contribute something of value to the community.

I tend to get more traffic from forums. But that's mainly because they're active communities and I'm leaving a few posts a day. It builds up over time.

Blogs are a little different. If you can be one of the first to comment on a post from a high traffic blog you can see a really nice spike in traffic for a few days. Then it tends to die down a little.
