I will be focusing on several different health/fitness niches.

For example, can I be successful starting with a general website such as, HealthFitnessGuru.com

Or to have success do I absolutely need an exact match domain for each individual niche within health and fitness. For example: jumpropeguide.com, wheyproteinguide.com, etc...

The short answer is no, you don't need to do that. Personally I prefer using a general website rather than smaller micro-niche websites. It's easier to succeed with the latter but the former is much more rewarding.

Hey John I was curious if you would be so kind as to clarify what you meant by your comment. You find it easier to succeed with micro niches but you find general websites more rewarding, if I understand correctly. What do you mean by rewarding, if I may ask?

      • You don't need an exact match domain. Last year around this time EMDs became much less important. If there is an open EMD out there that makes sense for your site then snatch it up, but don't build your site around it.

I think the debate for 1 authority site vs. several niche sites is still open. Preferabbly if you have say ten "guides", build them on 10 different domains, different IPs and link them together in a chain - effectively building a mini network of health guides - you should do well over time.

The other option is building one authority site, but then if it doesn't take off you have all your eggs in one basket. One authority site will be easier to manage though.

An other option which could also work is start with an authority site, see how it goes for 6 months. If nothing, then pull it down for 1 month while it gets de-indexed and split the authority site up across 10 smaller sites and try the network approach.

EMD's are not performing well. Here is a detailed post that explains why that's the case:

You don't need to and I'm sure in fact that you'll find a lot of people to recommend you to make authority sites so when you post a review or something for the product you're promoting it'll also be in the URL.

For example you can have a site like this: mydomain.com/affiliate-product-name and there you have the product name in your URL.

From everything that I have been reading EMD's are on their way out or are out. I personally would pick a brandable domain name that fits the niche. The shorter the domain the better and I always go with .com. Just my personal opinion though and I'm sure others will have their own.

I aways prefer exact match domains, because I use PPC and Adwords, so the domain name stands out better.
