Preferred Domain URL Question Please

Hi there,

I'm wondering if anybody can help me with a simple explanation of the differences between domain URLs i.e. domain.com, www.domain.com, and http://www.domain.com which is how Majestic SEO separate the backlinks when you use their Site Explorer?

So if each of those examples have different amounts of backlinks, is there something to do so you can make sure you get the full advantage of ALL of the backlinks from each of the three ways of displaying the domain?

Which leads to another question regarding Wordpress when it asks you for the preferred way of displaying the domain.

Thanks in advance

  • ItsChrissy,

The simple explanation is that those are all different URLs. There isn’t really any advantages or disadvantages (in general) among those domains. The main reason for canonicalization of URLs is to let search engines know which page is the one that should be indexed. You can also redirect www to non-www domains and vis versa if need be.

I also would not worry about building backlinks using the various domains. Typically hosting providers point naked domains (non-www versions) at the www versions and vis versa. You can also redirect them yourself.

You can learn more about canonicalization here,

    Hope that helps,
