    Skunkworks: noun. informal.

A clandestine group operating without any external intervention or oversight. Such groups achieve significant breakthroughs rarely discussed in public because they operate "outside the box".

The new setup they have is basically going to ignore and devalue those links, however they do mention that if YOU'RE not the one dropping them, then they are fine, and will work towards your ranking. Kind of confusing, waiting for more information to be dropped. The Google Guy in Switzerland didn't really answer any questions, and made it seem really sketchy.

I found this to be very interesting. It would be almost impossible to accurately devalue PR links across the board because of syndication partners.

Many of the sources that use PR syndication are the same ones that have the editorial links Google values so much.

I stopped using anchor text links long ago with press releases but I do not plan on adding a nofollow tag to a raw url link at the end of my release. I don't see how Google could justify penalizing this and I don't think they can accurately devalue these links across the board.

Too many companies all over the world use links in their press releases that don't even know what a nofollow tag is.

It can be true but hard to digest that links from AP or PRWeb like sites are worth nothing even when you spend thousands of dollars to publish a news.

      1) It doesn't cost thousands

      2) Have real news, not your spam no one gives a shit about

      3) Google doesn't want spammy anchor text in your PR and you shouldn't be using a wire service for links anyway.

Tbh, Google's just repeating what they've said all along... don't manipulate your rank in any way and provide good, natural content that users like (in this case, a newsworthy announcement, not anchor links) - anything beyond that, including link building you do yourself JUST for the sake of link building, is against TOS.

And as a side note, I hope press release's weren't your go to link building strategy for moving the ranks

I have never used Press release for any of my site. Don't even know whether it helps or not now-a-days.
