Hi guys,

I use a sitemap to get inform google/bing that these articles have been posted. For some reason, google decided to skip over a few and not index them. All articles are 100% unique. Any idea why google would skip indexing a few articles, but index other ones?

I want all my articles to be indexed so others cannot steal my content and use it to rank themselves.

  • Ravenx,

How are you checking to see if they are indexed? Are you using Google search with operators or are you looking in webmaster tools? If its WMT, sometimes that can take a while to update and Google doesn’t show you the whole picture.

Are you sure there isn’t anything in your robots file excluding those pages from search? Or perhaps a meta tag?

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

Are the titles unique or common long tail keywords?

I will recommend you build some good quality links for those pages which are not indexed yet, shall be not a bad idea.

Whether they're unique has nothing to do with whether they're indexed. Syndicated copies get indexed, too (they'll sometimes be in the supplemental index, on some searches, as indeed the original can sometimes be, too, but they'll still be indexed, if the page and site on which they're published are indexed).

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that isn't quite how it works. It's possible for someone to steal an already-indexed article and still outrank you for it. This depends on a variety of factors. However, making sure that your site has the initial indexation, though it isn't guaranteed to protect you against all instances of that individual article outranking you elsewhere, is clearly the right thing to do and does gradually confer a cumulative benefit (e.g. making it less likely that that will happen on future occasions, and making it more likely that it will be temporary when it does. It's not written in stone whether an article is indexed in the main or in the supplemental index: indeed, they can often even be in different ones for different search-terms, and that can also change. But you get the odds on your side, overall, by the gradual accumulation of initial indexations, so you're certainly not wrong to be concerned about this.)

Possibly there are keywords in the title that are stop words for Google. I have thousands of articles on one site. But there are a few articles that Google will just not index, or they will index but then de-index the page just a few days later. None of the content has been stolen either. I've even de-index the pages and resubmitted them with new url's, same thing happens. The articles were high-end also.

When I changed the words in the title, they finally got indexed and stayed indexed.

Alexa is right about the fact people may steal your content. But that's usually only possible if you at least have the homepage indexed first (or how else would they find you?).

You need links. Sitemaps (this one is the best, no affiliation) are great once you get spiders crawling, but you gotta have links for the spiders to follow to your site.

Build some backlinks! Using a Google Plus profile and google groups links works very quickly if you don't know where to start.

Do an [exact] URL search on Google to see If your pages are indexed.

Ye who gets indexed first means nothing.

The page with the better SEO wins when it comes to ranking a page in Google SERPs.
