I have heard that there is no point to even get a link from another site unless the content is related so it won't seem spammy to the search engines. Any truth to this?

Well in my opinion there may be more than hundred of sites that are not related to our site but we still post on them. Let us suppose i own a web development firm and my website is obviously offers the web developing services and look forward to post on a general category business directory manta or 192. Does it hurt on posting on these sites too as they are not theme based sites? and if not then why people suggest to look forward for the theme based website?

as far as my experience if say about this matter, if any site link to your website then it makes no difference, it is theme based or not but that site must be good .I may be 40% wrong but not absolutely wrong, so choose that site which is cached frequently and updated timely ,I think that would be no harm

Back links from unrelated website is counted as spam until they are not reported spam.
But definitely they are not worth-full as they are not from related content/website and not able to create traffic to site. Relevancy is must in SEO, but another truth is that every back links is important.

Your mileage may vary. But I've had links posted on unrelated sites and it helped it some. It certainly didn't hurt the ranking though.

  • Andrew,

The short answer is that this is not true.

Try to think of inbound linking less in terms of the attributes of single links and more about the overall profile of a site. Also keep in mind that ideally, search engines that use linking as a factor don’t want people to manipulate it at all. That means that even a high quality link between websites would be considered against the rules if built manually even if it provided a lot of value to users.

Google isn’t going to see one unrelated link and count it as spam or discredit the link because is links from an unrelated site. They start targeting sites that are doing these kinds of thing on a massive scale or that follow a pattern of deception of users. You should worry less about the types of links leading to your site and more about making a site that people love.

    Best,

    Shawn

Anyone who answers yes, and has a sig link, well, I guess that
answers the question. In fact, one thing that always intrigues me,
is why would you want a link from a rock solid related site? Just
for the heck of it? "Hey, forget this crappy site! Visit mine! I do
      this niche MUCH better!"

Don't relate crappy backlinks with nonrelated backlinks. They are
not the same. Like, you can't get a crappy backlink from a related
site? Just a reminder. We are talking about hurting, not what links
      "help" the most.

6 degrees of separation, for relation, can always be implemented
      anyway.

It depends on what service you use actually, some like cclassiphosting which I have used has very poor support but I find that Dollar $1 SEO hosting is really efficient in optimising your page with search engine. And on top of that it really cheap and affordable.

If links are on unrelated sites, but the sites are quality sites then it won't hurt, instead it would help a little.

Take example of forum signature, in this forum, all the sig links are not related to webmasters only.. some webmasters may be webmastering of dating, sites, finance sites etc.. they still use the dating or finance related link in their sig.

It won't hurt you as long as it's not in an extremely large quantity and they aren't low quality.

Having a few unrelated links is fine, having a few unrelated links on high PR pages is amazing.

It will not hurt your rankings. If Google will hurt the ranking of a website based on links from unrelated site, it will open doors for negative seo
