Ranking Tough Keywords

Hi gang,

I've searched a number of keywords for items which i am selling myself. TT says that they are either difficult or extremely difficult. But Niche Finder gives them yellow icons which means medium difficulty.

Some of the top ten website have absolutely huge amounts of backlinks and some have high PRs. For the main keyword wikipedia is ranked number 1.

My question is should i go after such keywords or just leave them well alone? Are backlink numbers and PRs super important?

  • Check SEO Moz's keyword difficulty tool - you can can sign up for a free 30 day membership. If the score is <60 then go for it. If +60 then might as well skip it unless you can parasite host off a super authority domain like Amazon or LinkedIn.

Well, I won't tell you not to go after the kws you want to pursue, but if you are going up the big boys you will have a tough time beating them out. It's much easier to drill down that root kw and find some that are easier to rank for while still providing decent traffic.

The answer is probably "no" unless you have a lot of patience, a lot of money to spend on links in one form or another, and the ability to produce a lot of content. Even with those things there is no guarantee that you would eventually compete for those keywords. The advice given above is good, if the Moz keyword tool says difficulty above 60, I would skip it.

Damn, I don't go for them if they are below 60+. Those are the ones with the money inside.

Here for the dimes or here for the dollars, should be the real question.

Need to spend monies to make monies would be the answer.

I actually agree with you Kevin. I guess a better way I could have said it would be "don't compete unless you've got the rocks, the smarts, and the money to do it right." Most average Joe's don't meet those requirements

Don't believe all what TT says..

Keyword Research should be coupled with a good amount of manual checks.

Here is an old video that i still find very helpful when starting keywords research
