Have more back links than my competitor but am ranked lower on Google/YouTube?

I currently have more back links than my competitors (for my YouTube video) by close to 1,000 back links but am ranked lower on Google/YouTube....The only thing they have more of is views, comments, likes etc....My questions are:

Is it only a matter of time until my video gets ranked better than my competitors?

Should I get more views, comments, likes etc..?

Should I keep sending back links?

How do I take over the top spot!?

Thanks in advance!

With the recent Penguin updates, its very clear than if you are trying to intentionally promote anything then Google is going to effect it adversely. So if you are trying to bring 100 likes in a day then you are straight away giving a reason to Google to come and penalize you. The best way is to promote your video but in the natural manner. For instance, try not to focus on your main keyword rather take help of LSI keywords. Moreover its better to bring likes or views but in a limited number and in a manner that seems to be realistic.

No surprise at all, Evan. It isn't about numbers of backlinks. It's about two things: quality and relevance. We can all see for ourselves that lower-PR pages with fewer backlinks regularly outrank higher-PR pages with more backlinks in Google's SERP's. But this is the place to discuss it, anyway: Adsense / PPC / SEO Discussion Forum

Well, you might be wrong. Lower-PR pages has some SEO strategy for sure. And number of quality backlins is pretty relevant. And ... "quality and relevance" is relative term.

It's hard to tell without checking the videos but this could be it. From my experience Google does give importance to views, comments and likes. Personally I think even the number of subscribers makes a difference to some extent, but I could be wrong.

That is the only thing that my competitors are ahead of me on...But I will not quit until I reach the top spot, I am already so close....It is like a scientific formula for me trying to outrank my competition but I enjoy every minute of it...

At one point I was getting 150 hops a day so I must have been at the top spot or close to it at some point but that only lasted for 2 days....Now I am at the bottom of page 1 and am only getting 2-10 hops daily....Looking forward to the challenging journey though and any help is greatly appreciated

The amount of links means nothing in SEO if those same links are low quality.

I have had similar problems with a lot of sites. I also have sites that rank well without a lot of backlinks. A lot is because of high quality content and keyword research.

I would defintly recommend some social signals like other were saying. Just focus on really good content and links from sites that have high quality relevant content!

I have seen great results from using social signals and high retention views in the past so I am going to stick with that for a bit....And patience really is super important when it comes to Youtube marketing...When I was first starting out I expected everything to happen so quickly and realized that I am building a long-term business and not a short-term business...It takes time to rank certain videos and I am am well on my way, I don't care how long it takes and I will not give up until I hit that #1 spot...

Backlinks to a youtube video, using the youtube url, are
        essentially usless.

Pages can show up with zero backlinks.

Cmon now, a Youtube page/URL is no different than the majority of the web pages on the net. They have PR & a Google Cache just like billions of web pages from other domains.

The end result is regular old HTML.

Always remember to compare apples to apples. A page rank 4 backlink carries more juice than a page rank 3 backlink. That's the first issue.

The second issue is one that you already have an answer too. On YouTube, they're looking for channel authority and social signals. Your competitors either have better back links or they have better authority and social signals.

    Good luck to ya friend.

As said above, it is all about link quality....... building high no. of low quality links may penalize as welly, so build few links with quality, relevant sites.

So many more variable go into domain rank. How old your website is. How many times it's been viewed. and alot more.

Furthermore, the page rank of what your linked to has a strong effect. Let's say you have company A with only one link (to wiki) and company B which only has one link to wiki. Company A's wiki only has text and two categories. Where as company B has text a couple of categories, photos and info. So company B would win this battle.

Also as someone said before, google can detect SEO Link Building strategy being implemented as links are increasing at a high rate.

Link building is a very long process. Unless your a big corporate it only serves as a supplemental strategy in SEO as you will never be able to compete with big corporates competing in the same market. your best bet is patience, and practicing consistent white hat SEO tactics.

May be because views, likes, and shares have bigger value than backlinks. Are the backlinks from high PR sites, it matters.
