Trying to find the Truth behind .com vs .info vs .org

I'm trying to get a little clarity on the issue of the superiority of website/domain extensions.

I've read some forum articles the point to .com always being the preferred choice. The same forum then explains that .info is only good for "spammers".

Other articles or forums state that it's ok to use the .info or .org if the domain prefix is a strong one [determined through Google research].

I'm looking for some insight and truth on this point [please!]

Thanks

There is no SEO advantage of TLD but you should go for the one that is related to your industry. If you have an organization then buying .org is better, .net is also associated with internet-related products etc

    I won't won't buy a .info

IN the Easy Way SEO he says it doesn't make a difference. But then he goes on to tell you what to do if Google drops your site - for whatever reason that you won't have privy to knowing.

You'll find that everyone prefers a .com with very few possible exceptions (I've seen reports which suggest .net might be more popular in some Asian countries but no real substantiation to back that up)...but of course comparing a .com to any other extension is dependant on the domain itself - a 3/4 keyword .com will (almost certainly) be less preferable than a one keyword .net.

The .com benefit really comes from the potential of type ins, and as soon as you go past the top 2 keyword phrases, this benefit starts shrinking.

I think the spammer comments re .infos have grown from the fact that they were either free or very cheap (and still are)

There doesn't seem to be any real difference from an SEO perspective regarding the different extensions, I've seen .infos at the top of search results same as any other extension.

  • The difference is PERCEPTION.

People have come to expect a .com for business... and .org for their original purpose organizations.

As stated above several times for SEO it should make no difference.

.info is usually very inexpensive to purchase. For this reason they are often used by spammers because their is less investment. There is speculation that Google "might" not count these as high when scoring sites; however that is just speculation. There is also speculation that registering a domain name for more than 1 years gets you entirely around the issue because it says to them this is not a disposable registration. But it's all speculation.

The safe bet is to simply register a .com and move on. However I have seen some .info's rank. But will your customers draw a connection between legitimacy and .info?

And if you do a great job of marketing your .info... and you customer types in your domain directly will they think .com or .info? If it's .com then whomever owns that name may be the benefactor of your marketing.

I've said it a dozen times and I'll stay it again, .com/.net/.info/.biz/.us/.whatever makes absolutely no difference. I have .info, .biz, and .dj and .vc domains all ranking well with google (yes US search results) because of the on page and off page optimization.

It's about barrier to entry with .info's costing so little they were common targets for BANS sites, TE sites, trend marketing etc etc. On cost alone they were going to attract a larger percentage of people cranking out low quality sites. They obviously still have their uses and I know some people are even fans of .info's but if you put a gun to my head I'd be looking at .com .net .org. Depends on your budget and what you are using the .info for really. This is the kind of subject that results in hyooge threads but a lot of it is pretty subjective without your own testing. Type your target keyword into the Google search engine and see how many .info's are in the top 10...

Yes, to some extent .info domains have been misused by spammers but you can avoid this impression if you register it for more than 2 years as spammers usually buy domains for short period of time. Also G does look into the WHOIS data of your domain to calculate your SERPs but it won't have huge impact.

I don't believe everything Matt says. His job is to sway us away from the facts. The way I see it is if Google values .gov and .edu stronger than .com, then who's to say they can't score .coms higher than .info.

Because lots of spammers use .info, I stay away from buying them because Google can one day decide .infos are irrelevant. I'm thinking of the future.

I don't think the extensions matter much. However; they do say that the longer your domain is registered for the better google ranks it since google is more assured of your stay on the search engine...
This makes sense.. and with .info's since they're so cheap.. Mostly $1 dollar now, vs $10 + .com's, it's easier to buy a 5 year .info than a 1 year .com.

    Think about that...

This topic has been discussed many times ad nauseam.

Domain extensions make no difference for SEO/spiders, but obviously they do for humans in terms of, as someone stated, perception.

For SEO, there is no difference among the domain endings; they all have the potential to rank equally. There is a perceived difference between a .com & .info, so that is why it is easier to sell a .com domain.

I have ranked a .info domain with over 3 million competition to the first page of google in just over 2 months. It was my first project so I don't have any high ranking .com or .net to compare but I can say that .info ranks fine just like any other, and if it's on page 1 people will click without looking at the domain extension.
