Where Do You Get That Degree? SEO Expert or Paid Search Specialist

I see a lot of companies are looking for people to do paid search and SEO work for their companies. To date I don't see any major 4-year colleges or tech schools teaching this kind of skill. How are these major companies finding folks to fit the bill? What kind of education background would one need to clinch one of these jobs? I'm just curious since I am starting to see more people looking for employees with this type of skill. Might be one of those hot new degrees to have like being an accountant or actuary right now is a good thing to be since everyone is checking the books for fraud and waste in small and large companies.

Well you're right, there is no 4 year university or degree designed for this yet and in my opinion a degree for SEO would probably end up being useless since it's something that changes so fast. These days most companies who are hiring in-house search engine optimizers are either looking for people with a degree in "marketing" (which is a big mistake since "marketing" is too general for SEO) or they are giving exams/quizes during the interview process and taking your word when you say you know SEO.

If you wanted to get a job at a company and erform SEO services the best thing you can do is show them what you've done so far and then go into detail about what it is that you would be able to do (link bait, on page optimization, seo copywriting, press releases, social bookmarking etc) because I garauntee you most of the people who apply for these SEO positions have no clue about any of that and will just go on and on about their education and about how they once designed a webpage for their uncle in 1998.
