Matt Cutts, Google's head of search spam, is giving some kind of warning for people having external liks in their widget. He highly recommends that widget links should be nofollow, As we all know in most of link purchases links are added in widget, this could be identified by Google as signs of link sales particularly when there are many externals links in the widget. If you have bought links I would recommend you to ask seller to place the link within body tag - Read More @ Search Engine Land

Funny thing about that article (didn't watch the video), If you look at most of the major xml sitemap plugins for Wordpress, the actual sitemap.xml page with CSS styling has followed backlinks. Those pages where the sitemap.xml files point backlinks too usually have a high PR.

That's link building flying under the radar (for now).

Probably you dont have experience in Link buying, I have given a reply for Bambu, if you think I haven't seen video.

Widget & Site map links are easily catachable. Penguin 2.0 showed a sign how widget links affect. There are 100's of companies poping out selling links, you might have noticed it .

No, the ultimate aim of Google is to make money.

Anyhow, you clearly did not watch the video. In it he does not discuss link sellers.

Also, he actually says that links in widgets are ok. He just suggests putting a nofollow on those links. He also says they probably are not going to carry much weight. In other words, Google is already more or less ignoring them. He says to be careful about widgets that have a bunch of 'mesothelioma' links and that sort of thing in them. Sometimes they are unseen.

Not a word about link sellers in the video or the article from Search Engine Land.

Even if it was about buying or selling links it would be old old news. Google has been talking about link selling for a decade or more. They cannot stop it and never will.

I heard Matt Cutt's saying this a while ago in one of his videos on YouTube...

I still haven't seen it take effect based on my rankings

Did you even read the article or watch the video:confused::confused: I doubt it...

Matt C. recommends links in widgets be made no follow to combat widget/plugin makers from gaming backlinks that their widgets/plugins produce when installed on your site.

This has nothing to do with selling/buying links.

    Carry on.

Funny ! Now I Doubt you understand the meaning behind video. :p Ultimate aim of Google is not prevent Game makers / Surveyors gain a link, but its to combact link selling. Most of small SEO companies / Freelance SEO engage in buying links, specifically from High PR sites and hundreds of links are placed in widgets site wide (for easy handling). Getting this link they Rank well too (personal exp.)
His video tells that if you are getting many links from widgets you will probably get washed out in next penguin.
Link selling has become a head ache for Google and they want to crack it down.

That Matt C. video (link in OP) might be new but the subject is over a year old. WPMU got shafted for stuffing backlinks in theme footers, it's not just about stuffing widgets, it's about blasting links to sites that voluntarily download anything that can generate a followed backlink.

        The rant:
