Best way to handle redirects?

I have a client going through a redesign - domain name is not changing, but URL structures are.

It's migrating to Wordpress, and plan to add redirects in the htaccess file for the top internally linked pages, but I don't want to overload the htaccess file with a lot of unnecessary redirects.

I have uploaded the sitemap to Google and Bing Webmaster Tools.

What else am I missing?

  • Honest tune,

I’m not sure how many directives you are adding to the .htaccess file but you would have to add quite a bit to slow the site down. For example I recently moved a website to a new domain and added more than 60 redirects and it did not slow the site down.

Don’t forget to add a change of address in WMT if you have the site registered there.

    Best,

If the client already has pages ranked on those old URLs your playing with fire If you don't get those pages properly redirected.

IMO, delete everything in the Wordpress theme 404.php template file (301 code in link below) & do a sitewide redirect to catch anything/everything that gets missed as far as redirects. Still, you need to get those redirects to already ranked pages/URLs perfect, the 404 redirect is just a safety net in case something gets overlooked.

Related 301 redirect for 404.php page.

Are you going to redirect pages individually or you want to redirect all the pages to one page or home page?
