flipping domain name question

hi guys, i recently started looking at expiring domain names to look for some good ones i could possibly sell.

so far i've seen one particular domain for mortgages, a company name. There are 2-3 companies with this exact name in my country, but the top ranked is using a .net TLD and the second one is .co.uk with a hyphen in the middle of the name.

i've never done this before so i'm not sure if it's worth it, i was thinking i could buy the name and then approach them about buying it somehow, not sure how i'd get through to the right person.

i was just wondering, do people actually buy in situations like these? i doubt they invest a lot on SEO since they seem to be smaller companies, so that makes me think they won't want to dish out money for a .com

Owning the .com would have no effect on seo for them, unless they started putting content on it and backlinking of course. But simply for branding purposes I wouldn't be surprised if they buy it. I get emails all the time from companies asking to sell me a domain name that is similar to one I already own, so it must work pretty well.

Sorry I don't agree with you. Having a ".com" domain name is considered better than having a ".co.uk" domain name as its more universal and other reasons.

Also this second company that has a hyphen in the domain name would be VERY interested in your offer. (Plus they get a ".com")

A hyphen in a domain name looks spammy to visitors and Google. If you think about it, what top sites have hyphens in them? Google, Facebook, CNN?
