Hi,

Although being 2 or 3 years ago a number of people said that when launching a new site you should spend money on CPC even at a loss. For example you spend $50 to get $30 back. Can anyone advise why this is please and what any possible benefits are.

The trick I knew that relates to this was to start bidding higher and then after a couple days take the bids low and you won't lose your ad's positions. This was true a year ago when I made PPC, not sure about now. Maybe that's what the OP heard

If you're trying to rank your site through SEO you would pay for clicks to see what keywords convert before deciding which keyword to optimise for.

Losing money on campaign initially, before it makes a profit is absolutely normal.

You need to have some data to play around with before making anything, so even if you lose a bit of money in the beginning, but then manage to turn the campaign into a profitable business, then there's nothing wrong with that.
