should I spend time on back links

I started a movie website which is called Latest Movies and Reviews. It's really young so it has not been indexed very much by Google. I have not spent a ton of time writing content yet since I've been developing it.

My question is should I worry about backlinks. It seems every time I start looking into this I get frustrated and it makes me want to give up messing with them. it seems forums, and commenting on blogs is not considered good practice as it's really just spamming other peoples blogs and sites.

    Yes, you should.

Waiting for other websites to link to you (especially since your niche is in movie reviews) will probably take forever. Get out there and start building.

Do it. Get back links. You don't have to comment with spammy material on forums and blogs you know. Either do it yourself finding quality sites with some good PR or traffic...or find someone that can do it for you (PM me...?) ha

Just keep doing your research and don't give up.

So I guess I'm confused about what to do. For instance, I can sign up for Rotten Tomatoes and post there, but I don't see how that's not considered spammy?

Should I be trying to contact blog owners for guest posts?

Honestly, you have no idea on how to back-link.

Your best bet is to either spend 2-3 weeks on learning how to do SEO and create back-links OR you can hire someone.

Check out eLance.com, I use them all the time to hire and work.

(P.S. If you are blog posting or forum posting it is considered low-value, but if its contextual than it can be good for your website)

Yes instead of forum profiles/comments etc. You can try to go for high PR web 2.0 blogs or other ways to get contextual links to your website. They are more good ways than profile/comment links.

As everyone agrees contextual links works these days...

Building backlinks is just as important as on-page seo. All of the websites on the first page of Google have high quality backlinks. Diversify the way you are building backlinks. Also use an assortment of anchor texts.

Chawk, if this is a site that you plan on putting a lot of work into, I think it's worth it to begin building your own private network. That's working really well right now.
