I think this falls under "Special Rules for Special People" In every way, it's identical to their list of recommended stories. Yahoo News BTW.

Really doesn't matter. Google trust yahoo ($$) to pretty much do whatever they want. I'm sure yahoo has a multi-million dollar advertising dept. spending boat loads of money everyday on Google/Adwords.

Premium publishers have all freedom from google adsense, they can do whatever they want. :-).

Premium publishers are trusted blindly by google as they are all reputed websites.

Well, as a premium publisher before getting banned you will have your account manager give you a warning first. Therefore, you can probably mess around with "weird and shady" ad placements.

Premium partners, like yahoo, will not get banned. I guarantee some ads are also
not open to the average adwords user. Yahoo is not doing anything weird or
shady. They are doing things smartly. The average Joe cannot, because the
average Joe has proven he is an idiot and cannot be trusted.

Yahoo runs only some google ads anyway. They run their own most of the
time. They look exactly like adsense and use adchoices as well. So, perhaps
that's not even a google ad.
