Hi,

If I have an image website. Adding keywords to the uploaded files' names will improve my rankings in Google or have only a little effect?
I am interested in both image search and simple search ranking.

Thanks!

Using proper alt text might have more impact on top search results compared to using file names.

Yes that's true, adding alt text to the images have more impact on top search results compared to using file names because alt tag tells the search engine spiders about the image.

You can add a keyword to the image file name, but you'll have better luck ranking images with these things:
    • Keyword in page <title> where image is shown.
    • Image surrounded by plain text keywords.
    • Links point to image, again, surround links pointing to image with plain text keywords.
    • Create an image xml sitemap & submit to Google Webmaster Tools to help draw attention to your images.
    • Use keywords in the Image alt text.

Thanks for the answers! So it seems that it is indeed not that important. I will try your tips.
    Thanks again!

The filename hasn't mattered in any of my tests. The alt and title tags do matter.

Yes, use one key term that describes the image in your image file name. It helps with image search in Google.

For instance, if you have an image with alt text: LOL Catz Collectible Cards
You would want to change your image file name to: lol-catz-collectible-cards.png
