There are a couple elements to your question. When you heard that links in forum signatures were not good for SEO, its not that they are hurting your site, its just that they are a lower quality link. Google knows that people can just join a forum and start making post after post to build up links so these are not given as much weight as a link that is embedded in copy in the middle of a web page that has limited administration.

Even though those links don’t carry a lot of weight in terms of passing PR, people still follow those links to your website. And if you can build yourself as an authority in your niche, people will be much more likely to follow those links. So they can be beneficial but not necessarily for seo.

Besides SEO purpose, forum signature can deliver traffic to a website if you find a forum that has high traffic then you make many useful posts or threads which contain your signature link.

I think forum signature is helpful only when you commenting on relevant forums and not on other forums. Also, recently Google mentioned about a contextual links in forum and blogs. The contextual link building bring more traffic than links in signature.

Forum signature gives benefit of links too, but the benefit is very less, however you get traffic, and traffic is also one factor in SEO.

Besides thinking of SEO, use your forum profile as worth one and people will be attracted to your signature to click it. It will bring traffic to your site and wait to see if something good will happen or not.

Forum backlinks can help to a small degree. Below, you'll see a link as a backlink. However, don't rely on forums alone. There are a lot more ways of getting backlinks.

also - make sure you put your links as naked URLs, "phrase backlinks" and very little exact backlinks like mine below.

I would only used forum profile links for tiered-backlinks. That way, if your links do get penalized, it will only affect the tiered backlinks and not your main website itself.

Forum signature baclklinks are powerful in improving your off-page SEO. Some forums are ranked very low, so backlinks from them are less valuable. Backlinks that come from good authority forums are more valuable, but you have to find them first.

They are NOT remotely close to being "powerful" for SEO; the pretty close to being useless for SEO!

If your forum signature is relevant to the forum niche and the niche of topic is discussing, then it can give you traffic and backlink as well. Always try to put quality content and link in forum communities websites.

This forum is a good example.

From SEO point is a link from this worth what?
Check the massive amount WF is sending out on all pages. Thats how much? 10k or more? And check out the quality. Just count the "quality" of signatures in this thread.

From SEO point, its worthless and i would even say this is a good example of bad neighbourhood.

Go to some more "SEO" forums and spam your sites to the signature and google Penguin will see a big red sign calling "i am a seo doing link building".

On the other side, this forum is for sure good for traffic through signatures if you do it right.
