Text ads earning a lot more...

Hi all,

All the advise I've read says to enable both image and text ads in Adsense.

This is apparently so that you don't limit the number of "bidders" and get the highest paying ads on to your site.

For this reason, I've always had both image and text ads enabled.

However, I notice that 71% of my Adsense income comes from text ads. They have the best CTR out of all ad types on my site and by far the best RPM.

Is this normal? Do you still think it's best that I keep both image and text ads enabled? Or do you think I could earn more by switching to text ads only?

Thanks in advance.

Adam

From years of testing, Adsense image ads have always been low performers compared to text ads.

Yes that is correct. Image ads are put off!

Well, i can say that this depends on the niche.
If you have a niche like "acne treatment", i think images ads will work better than text ads.

Generally, websites report a lower CTR for text ads in comparison to image ads. However, text ads still provide a better eCPM.

So effectively, you'll still make more money using text ads even if they have a lower CTR.

I used to run only text based ads with the idea that the higher CTR meant increased earnings, but I decided to run a 2 week test with text + image ads, and in my case my earnings increased.

I think Google knows best in these instances and you can trust them to optimize ad delivery for the highest payout for you (and Google).

Run a two week test and see for yourself.

I thought Google might also know best, they don't.

I split test image/text ads at least once a year, nothing changes, text ads always smokes image ads in everything (CTR, earnings). Been doing this 6 years.

I do suggest everyone test their own sites, still I would be surprised If image ads ever outperformed text ads.

Thanks all. I really appreciate your thoughts on this.

I'll run a test and see how RPM is affected. (I assume that's the key metric here. My site is in quite a rapid growth phase, so I won't just look at earnings - as they're increasing anyway - and obviously CTR could go up but at a lower CPC. So I guess RPM is really the key indicator.)

I'm a bit nervous about ignoring Google's advise and clicking that "text only" button. As some of you pointed out, it's in Google's interest for my site to make money, and they should be pretty good at it!

However, as some of you also said - it may vary by site and it's always worth testing, so I'll give it a try.

Google will always look out for their own best interest. They have Adwords advertisers targeting image ads, so obviously Google will tell Adsense pubs. to promote image ads on Adsense, doesn't mean the image ad CTR/CPC will be worthwhile for an Adsense publisher (never has been for my sites).

Test image ads, If they fail simply switch back to text ads. It's not like you can't switch back & forth between image & text ads whenever you want, as often as you want.

well in my case the ctr for text ads was about 2.5% and low cpc, but for images the ctr was about 1% but images payed alot more than texts for me. enabling both gives you a healthy mix and more optimized earnings.

Fair enough. If I had similar stats then I'd probably stick with a mix of images and text too. However, for my site:

Text CTR is double image CTR.

Text CPC is higher than image CPC (except for "Rich media" ads... but their CTR is much lower)

Text RPM is more than double image RPM (averaged across Rich Media, Image, Flash and Animated).

      So I reckon it's worth a text-only test.

Yeah in that case stick with text ads, but that would eventually lessen the competition for that ad spot which is then lower cpc.
