Disappeared off Page 1 search results - why?

Over the last few months on of my niche sites has quietly risen to PR 1 and onto Google Page 1 for it's primary keyword and was bringing in 100 people a day, 75% from Google.

Suddenly, over a week, the traffic dropped to 10 per day, and my site has dropped off Googles page 1 and out of sight in the search results, taking most of my income from this site with it :-(

The site is all original material and I've not been doing any black hat SEO that I'm aware of. About the only thing 'new' I did during the previous fortnight was add a bunch more RSS aggregators using Icansoft's RSS Bot to semi-automate the task and install their Tranlator script.

Googles Webmaster Tools report:
50 URL's indexed - which would be correct
No problems with duplicate content
Sitemap is being read regularly without problems

PR is still being reported on the Google Toolbar as PR1

With visitors down 90% the loss of the Page 1 position is costing me significant money.

Why would this happen, and what do I need to do to get back to the results I had before??

Thanks

I find rankings bounce around when google are updating their index in a major way, i was on a couple of the forums over the last couple of days, and alot of posts have been about why have i lost my rankings in google. On top of this google have updated their backlink counts for sites as well.
it looks like google might of have done (or are doing) a minor update to their search engine at the moment, and it bouncing around is normal. However if they have changed the way they rank the websites, then your rank might change because of it.

Please - don't go on PR alone, PR3 is page rank yes, but NOT keyword rank, you can beat a pr3-4 site out ranking one in google with a pr0 site, it's all about keywords, and backlinks, pr is just an indication of how maybe links in total the page has, not how many links for an indivual keyword.

      Thanks for the replies.

The thought that the search position may come back once Googles settled down is reasuring.

It does however point out the danger of 'having all your eggs in one basket', ie Googles

I just noticed that my initial post could have been confusing in that some members may have thought I was bringing articles into the blog by RSS, when in fact the RSS is being used outgoing, in an attempt to widen the audience- so I'll improve it and repost it in full below.

What I have never heard discussed here or elsewhere when
this happens, is what about the other people like you who
are targeting this niche, keyword, or similar venture. If they
are constantly doing tweaks, then it seems it is only
natural to trade places, drop down, move up, etc. The
real trouble would be if you were #1 for say 6 months,
then the boom was lowered. That would be worth
        some detective work.

I would be happy to take a few minutes to evaluate your website to see if I can identify any likely sources that could be causing the problem that you are experiencing.

What is the website that you are having trouble with?

    Hey Allan,

You are experiencing the "Google Dance", this happens all the time with new sites. However, Google has recently made some changes, and it has affected older sites as well, your site should go back to its original position soon.

First of all, an important factor here might be how old the site is. Dramatic drops in rankings are common for the resources that are green behind the ears...

Second, your present backlink situation needs to be considered. How many backlinks do you have? Have any of them been deleted? And, most importantly, are you continuously building new links?

Third, it might be the competitor factor (although I must say this one looks unlikely given your prior performance and the scope of the changes).

Fourth, google is up to something big at the moment, curious activities are recorded every now and then, so we all will have to wait until things settle a little to see where we actually are.

And finally, you have voiced an extremely valid idea yourself: putting all the eggs in one basket is risky. Optimizing and advertising for google is good, and needs to be there, but one also need to keep traffic in mind and think of how to attract human beings, and not only google bots, to their site, if you see what I mean.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Happened to me a few weeks ago - scary isn't it? Just wait and sit it out. Don't panic and start changing things around on your site.
My site popped back into place after about 10 days.

I totally understand how you feel when you lose your position in Google..especially when it involves loss of income. It's like the whole world is depending on Google to send them traffic. "Google Dance" happens all the time to my sites...especially new sites. I also noticed that it doesn't really happen for sites that are more than 6 months. No worries...just continue building quality backlinks and your site will be No 1 again in no time.

Haha, it's funny how much Google controls our lives. It's as if we as SEO'ers and Internet Marketers are almost a cyber slave to the search engine, with everyone else in the outside world not being aware of our predicament.

But yes, you're most likely just going through the Google dance. Don't over analyze anything until your site has been around for a while and hasn't had any major content/backling building changes at all.

Thanks for the suggestion but RSSBot is an external application. All it does is advise various RSS aggregators of the blogs posts. It's a bit like social book marketing, but for RSS

Hey! Thanks. A couple of people have said much the same thing which is reassuring.

The whole experience has told me two things:

      1) You guys here are superb - I really appreciate the input.

      2) I need to work more on my SEO for MSN (I'm SERP #1 on Yahoo for my primary keyword - and it still only brings a dribble of visitors in) so as not to have such a reliance on google to stream my visitors/buyers in.
