Adsence: Defining First Ad Unit?

I've read https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/187769 regarding defining the first Ad unit. I use plugins like quick adsense and WP insert which allows me to insert the code easily and the ad will appear in the corresponding area.

I want to know if just adding the below ad1 div around the ad code will be enough or do I need to make further changes elsewhere on the site for it to work correctly? There are recommendations that defining the ad with the highest CTR as the first one will improve performance.

<div id="ad1″>
Insert your ad code here
</div>

    It's your choice.

    But it's kind of a non issue. Every page of mine, the best
    performing ad IS the one that is first loaded. I don't need
    to designate another one down the page.

    That's the key. Your first ad does indeed need to be the best
    ad.

    Think of what happens when you do that. You let
    natural selection apply, and google targets the first loading
    ad at the top or first in html, and the second ad is the one that
    gets clicked. So, you decide to flip them. Problem is, now the
    ads that were naturally loading in the first slot get loaded in
    the second slot. If they were not getting clicks now, why would
    THOSE ads now be getting clicks in the second slot? Makes no sense.

    It is better to let natural things occur. Google has been doing this for
    years. Why they came up with that nonsense has always been beyond
    me. You are so much better getting the highest bidder in the top ad,
    period.

    Add to this, that all advertisers DO NOT use all ad formats. So if your
    top ad is 728, 2nd 336, and you flip them, and the potential highest
    bidder does not use 336 format, then what?

    I have found that the highest paying ads are using 728, and this gets
    the highest CTR for me.

    But, yeah, each page is different. Try it and see. You just need the
    google code, nothing else.
