When starting out in PPC would you suggest using:
Exact
Phrase or
Broad

Would you just use Exact to start or all 3

thanx

I usually start with Exact match and very targeted Phrase match with lots of negatives.
When helping others, I teach them to build their campaigns depending on their initial budget. Just make sure they won't be wasting money.

If you have more money to invest, you can start with modified broad as well, but again with lots of negatives, so that you keep your CTR high, which is crucial in the early stages.

    Hope that helps!

  • Moneyland,

Svetod has some good tips. The type of configuration you use will also depend on your goals as well as what it is you are selling. For instance if you are selling multiple versions of a product and there is evidence that users are entering very specific queries to find it online, then you would definitely want to go with svetod’s strategy and be very targeted with exact or phrase match. That will make it so you don’t waste a lot time and money on traffic that isn’t interested in your ad or landing page.

Conversely, if you were running a brand awareness campaign or just wanted to get as much traffic as possible, then using broad match would work.

    Best,

    Shawn

I'd always suggest trying all match types BUT make sure you look at your search query reports to find the actual keywords, triggered by broad match, that produce your traffic and conversions THEN add the most successful ones OR add the unproductive ones as negatives.

In case you didn't know, heres (screenshot) where to find the actual keywords producing your traffic.

Good suggestion. But since you mentioned that you are just starting out with PPC, start with relevant, exact match keywords to get a feel of how PPC works. Then you can slowly start adding other match types.

You better start slowly, since you are new to this! You don't want to waste your money before you get the concept.
