Scheduling Seasonal Content to Maximize SEO?

I run a site related to fantasy sports where traffic is very seasonal. I've noticed that sometimes when I write a new article it will start-out being ranked high, but will then drop and be replaced by fresher content, many times from forums or other community-based sites. From an SEO perspective, would it make more sense to schedule sports-specific article publications during the season in which they're relevant?

So if I had a fantasy basketball-related article ready to publish, would it make more sense to withhold publication until fantasy basketball becomes relevant so as to maximize the freshness component that comes with new content, social shares, etc?

If you have an established site you could use the old outdated seasonal content to help boost the new seasonal pages, then on all the outdated pages point links at your new seasonal page.

Another thing you could do is add todays date someplace on the page as sitewide plain text (php code here) to make that old content look evergreen as far as SEO goes, example todays date in the header across the entire site, news sites do this all the time.

Next go back & edit each of the old pages of seasonal content & add a link pointing to the new seasonal page with a short explanation that If traffic is currently viewing an outdated seasonal page, here's the link to the latest seasonal page, repeat each season.

...or you could 301 redirect all the old seasonal pages to the new seasonal page, that gives you an advantage of the old content constantly being re-indexed in Google SERPs over the last year (instant authority for the new page) & any old backlinks would then be redirected to the new page.

Whatever you do, never leave old internal pages to die (404), always reuse old internal pages (URLs) for live web pages. Some people just delete unwanted internal pages which is a waste.

      Thanks for the reply.

What about for content that isn't necessarily a repeat or refashion of previous content, but is Evergreen in nature? Let's say I have an article ready on "The Best Scoring System for Fantasy Basketball.", would you generally benefit more by getting it out there now, or waiting until it is a hot topic (right when basketball season is about to start) to benefit from the freshness?

The longer the page is indexed in the SERPs the more time you have to tweak everything.

I guess the real question is, If the page goes live right now, will it confuse your traffic?

If you don't already have a lot of repeat traffic that might be confused (time sensitive content/page) I don't see any reason to wait to get the page indexed.

Sort of like Walmart, the day after Halloween is over (Nov 1st) they'll start setting up Christmas trees, etc... for the next holiday.
