The way I understood it, that's like writing social network related articles and sharing them through social network sites (social signals) such as Twitter, FB, Instagram, YouTube, among others.

I do this in my business, too.

The easiest way to think of the two is like this:

Social signals are what happens when friends recommend content to friends & it is unattached to an author.

    - Example: two political wonks are going to share articles from a large variety of news sources. The content they share is typically shared based on it's contents and not the author of that content.

Social Networking Sites are communities of users with 'sometimes similar' interests, but not always. Either way, the content is typically attached to a specific author and their participation in other areas of the same networking site is typically how their content is spread.

    - Example: On squidoo you can create posts that are basically glorified articles and a typical method of getting exposure for your content is participating in the other areas of the site such as the forum.

Both have the word social in them because both are dependent on interaction between two people. But it's the basis of what that content is and how it is shared that separates the two concepts entirely.
