Will Google UK rankings improve if I point .co.uk domain

I'm trying to decide on the best way to get decent UK Google rankings while keeping my US rankings.

I have a WordPress blog that is using a generic .com domain name, if I buy the .co.uk version of my domain and point it to my blog homepage, will it improve the blogs 'overall' UK Google rankings, or just the rankings for the blog homepage?

Alternatively, I might consider a totally separate WordPress blog using the same theme and branding but with the co.uk domain name and keep this separate blog, specifically for all UK related content, while cross-linking between the two blogs. Would this be a better way to do it than just pointing a .co.uk at the .com homepage?

Also, one other quick question, as .COM is considered a generic domain name, would you get better rankings in the US if you used a .US domain name?
The reason I ask is because I'm thinking about using the .COM domain just for my 'generic' content and then using a .US for USA relevant content and a .CO.UK for UK relevant content. This seems like a way to have all bases covered.

What would you suggest is the best SEO strategy for a Blog that had some content just for the US market, some content just for the UK only, and other content for was everyone?
