What to do with spammed forum?

This site was one of those "seemed a good idea when I was getting into IM" projects. I have a PHPbb forum built out on the subdomain forums.xxxxxx.com, with nothing ever done with the main domain name, a name which I am kind of sad to part with as I still think it has potential for a good site.

Hadn't touched it in years, totally dead forum, I was thinking of selling it for the PR2 which that "forums" subdomain has, which could be redirected to the root domain, but had a look and realised there are thousands of spam backlinks to member profile pages (now non-existent, since I deleted all the spam signups). DAMN, they got round the non-standard bot challenge question at some point and I never noticed! One backlink is on a pahe with 15000 OBL on it - BIG ROFL!!

I realise this is normal for a forum, Google almost certainly makes some kind of allowances for this, otherwise all forums would be penalised. Weird thing is the PR2 on the forum homepage must be thanks to those spam backlinks!

I reckon I might redirect all the 404s from the deleted member profile pages to the homepage and get even more juice from all those backlinks, perhaps even a higher PR. But I can't use the domain for an SEO network myself as it's been on my shared hosting, and I probably can't sell it now, shame, it's quite a nice little domain name.

Any bright ideas?

I think your best hope may be what you mentioned already. Try redirecting the 404s for some juice and maybe clean out the forum and start fresh... or get rid of the forum, make it a blog with reviews of products and internet marketing advice.

The only thing I'd worry about is the changes to Google's search algorithms recently. You might get penalized for all of the redirects.

If your not going to moderate the forum, delete it.

Oh, I definitely don't want to run the forum, I was more sort of wondering what people thought about a domain that's got a bit of age and PR but been spammed to hell like that - not by myself, but the distinction might well be lost on Google... Whether it is forever tainted..!

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

Stick it into an auction and see what you get, ifs its not much just suck it up and dont waste anymore time thinking about it

That's kind of what I am thinking - where's a good place to auction a domain? I.e. where the fee isn't actually higher than what I'll get for it? (which is probably $10 )

runing is a forum is not an easy game, moderation is needed 24/7 to keep it clean and work in a gentelmen's way

Man, mods are always needed. Go hire someone, or invite some of them to help you.
In my facebook fanpage, I go with hired ads, since they are more pro at first. Then I'll replace them with seasoned mod as forums go better.

@ markowe, what's the niche the forum is targeting?

Maybe try & sell the forum to an existing same niche webmaster? Might get more than $10 with no fees added to the sale. $20 from a direct sale (webmaster) is better than $10 + auction fees.

My point is the site/domain might be more valuable to a same niche webmaster than some random guy buying a domain for the sake of a low PR.
