How Can A U.S. Business Rank Organically In Canada?

I presented my company's solution to U.S. business that is located in Maine, that sits right on the river separating the U.S. from Canada.

They are trying to penetrate certain Canadian towns organically, but they have had no luck in doing so. He told me he has tried purchasing .ca domains, but can't because of the Canadian regulations and also says that when he searches on the U.S. side, only U.S. businesses show up and when he searches on the Canadian side, only Canadian businesses show up.

Has anyone ever optimized a U.S. business for Canadian cities or terms and had success getting traffic from them. This business is looking for keywords like 'used tools New Brunswick'. While that's not the industry, it's a good example of what types of searches they are looking to optimize for.

Any help on this would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Nbianco,

Have you tried geo tagging or marking up your address content with mircodata? That can help both devices and search engines to determine where you are located and if you are relevant to a user’s query. The .ca domain would be ideal as well however I understand the roadblocks.

I have not tried that or anything yet, because this business is not yet a client. They are interested in our solution, but haven't solved the organic marketing to Canada dilemma yet.

I'm going to research that a little more and see how I can incorporate it.

      Thank you for the reply!
