My Competitive Keywords

Hey guys I just want to know how well my performance compares with other SEOs. In 3 months of SEO we went from obsolete to #2 through #5 (google dance every day) for "web design [city name]" The city is pretty competitive with 30 web design firms and SEM Rush has the competition for this keyword at 0.75 (on 0.01 to 1.00 scale, 1.00 being most difficult like "insurance"). The companies mostly are PR 3 or 4. They have been around for about a decade, most of them. This isn't our prized keyword but it's one of the more important ones, with 75 searches per month @ $6 CPC.

I'm hoping and praying that we get a solid #1 spot within 2 more months. So 5 months total for targeting this specific keyword. Is this good?

I think it's tough to really say whether you did a good job. It depends on the quality of leads you get from being in one of those top 5 spot and whether those leads generate more revenue than you spend on your SEO.

2-5 for a .75 comp. keyword is pretty good though, generally speaking.

tjtigers14 just said it perfectly. It all depends on the leads you're getting from that keywords. But at 75 searches, personally I find it hard to get a good ROI from that unless you're #1.

Assuming you're ranked #1 for that keyword and you're getting 50 visitors from it per month, you would have to convert at 2% to get a client from that keyword.

    50 visitors @ 2% conversion rate = 1 client.

Assuming a client is worth $500 to you then and if you're converting at 2% that keyword would bring in $500 to your web design business.

    50 visitors @ 2% conversion rate = $500 revenue

Worth it for 2 months work? Well, that's up to you to decide.

Another way is to buy PPC ads at $6 CPC as you mentioned. If your website can convert at 2% then buying 100 visitors to your website = ~$600. Revenue made = $1,000. That's actually a decent ROI.

    100 visitors @ $600 PPC spent @ 2% conversion rate = $1,000 revenue.

Now all this is assuming, your website can convert visitors to clients at 2% conversion rate and your revenue per client is $500.

That was all very well thought out. I appreciate that, tj. An average sale for this keyword is worth about $2k for me. But it can have a lifetime value of over $200k, depending on upsells.

    Hey Counselor,

Have you tried some PPC to see if the keyword is converting? Often as SEO'ers we look at the traffic, and think "Hey that will be amazing to have!" often times this traffic might not be the best.

Now, you might be perfectly fine within your niche to go after that keyword. However, I always take one month to test it out if I'm going to be spending 3-5 months on gaining the ranks.

Also, remember your competition will fight you right back for that keyword if it's profitable, be ready to fight for sometime.

I would suggest getting a smaller network of like 5-10 sites, and they can kiss their number one spot asses good bye!

    Good luck!

Are you saying that I should make 5-10 new websites and compete with myself for the #1 spot?

Can you elaborate on this? I want to be sure I understand what you mean.

So, you're bumping into websites that have been around for 10 years in that city. Your SEO matters but what is more important is your business. Is it sound? Will you stick around? We can all crash in and bump businesses in the serps but do you have the staying power and an "on the ground" business to fit your position?
